  • Abstract:
This paper critically reviews current construction industry practice in environmental assessment, identifying gaps and shortcomings in current approaches when viewed from the wider perspective of sustainable development. Lack of common understanding is a significant problem. A number of blueprints for a more sustainable lifestyle which have merged from the business and manufacturing sectors such as 'natural step' and the 'service economy' are explored in order to identify changes that will be expected in the practice and procedures of the construction industry. This presents a considerable challenge, as the questions presented by the need to assess and create more sustainable buildings and cities require wider horizons, much greater resource efficiency and effective participation in decision making
