- Abstract:
The digitalization and servitization of the healthcare sector, combined with the urgent need for sustainability in urban development, demand innovative approaches to holistic system design. Smart hospital systems face two critical challenges: high energy consumption and the need to meet diverse societal demands. While Sustainable Design (SD) and Responsible Project Management (RPM) have been explored independently to address these issues, their integration remains underexplored. This study examines a smart hospital system design project, employing a grounded theory coding strategy to uncover the key design elements of SD and RPM used in the process and to investigate how these elements interact. The findings identify seven essential aggregated dimensions that integrate SD and RPM design elements, showcasing their synergy in overcoming the complexities of healthcare infrastructure design. A grounded framework is developed to illustrate the integration of these dimensions and their interplay. This research advances the discourse on design and project management in smart hospital contexts, providing actionable frameworks for creating sustainable, high-impact healthcare facilities.
