- Abstract:
The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is plagued by poor cost performance, with most construction projects experiencing cost overruns, delays, and poor efficiency and performance. Traditional cost management methods often fail to provide timely insights and accurate predictions, aggravating this issue. This study explores the integration of digital twins with cost management, leveraging Building Information Modelling (BIM) data, as a potential solution. Building upon the synchronisation approach of the orthogonal synchronised digital twin (SDT) model, this study adopts a design science research (DSR) approach, combining a comprehensive literature review with semi-structured interviews with industry experts, to develop a digital twin-enabled cost management framework. The proposed framework consists of four key components: (1) Digital Twin Component, (2) Cost Management Component, (3) Data Analytics Component, and (4) Integration Component. The proposed framework enables real-time cost data analysis, simulation, and optimisation. This study addresses a significant research gap and provides a foundation for future research and practice in digital twin-enabled cost management.
