- Abstract:
Integrating sustainability into higher education is vital to addressing global challenges, especially given the construction sector’s role in carbon emissions and resource depletion. However, a gap persists between theoretical concepts and practical applications in education. This article evaluates the design, implementation and impact of the SUSTAINABUILD Erasmus+ course, involving institutions from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Spain, to equip students with the skills to design adaptable buildings through a hybrid course model. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining student surveys and educator feedback to assess the course's effectiveness in enhancing knowledge, teamwork, and sustainability competencies. Results indicate improved student understanding of sustainable construction and developing soft skills such as teamwork, intercultural communication, and reflective thinking. The international nature of the course increased the effectiveness of student learning. Educators praised the course's structure but suggested increasing interactivity and reflective practices. The study highlights the course’s potential to prepare professionals for sustainability challenges. Future iterations will expand its reach, refining content to increase impact.
