- Abstract:
Despite the extensive literature devoted to trust, control and performance in International Joint Ventures, most of the existing studies only explore these variables individually or in pairs. This work intends to highlight the importance of simultaneously analyzing trust levels, control mechanisms and resulting performance in International Joint Ventures and, additionally, to provide construction companies with a related framework that helps them make decisions before and during their participation in these alliances. After a comprehensive literature review, findings from previous studies are consolidated into a novel approach that explains the dynamics between trust, control and performance in practice, and proposes guidelines for construction organizations participating in International Joint Ventures. The study shows the intricate cause-effect relationships between trust, control and performance in International Joint Ventures, indicating that every change or alteration, planned or not, in any of these variables will inevitably have an impact (direct or indirect) on the other two. Consequently, it is mandatory that parent companies know what kind of analysis to perform and courses of actions to follow at the different stages in the life of these alliances.
