Legal and contractual risks in green building (GB), such as ambiguous contract wording, certification delays, and the underperformance of green materials, pose significant challenges to the successful delivery of GB projects. To address these challenges, the broader research aims to develop a risk management framework tailored to the unique legal and contractual dimensions of GB projects. This paper focuses on the methodological approach underpinning the framework’s development, guided by a pragmatic research philosophy and a sequential mixed-methods design. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, including project managers, legal professionals and contractors, to explore risk perceptions and capture GB projects' diverse experiences. These findings will inform the design of a quantitative survey, aimed at validating and generalising insights across a broader sample. The methodology is designed to ensure that the proposed framework is both context-sensitive and generalisable, bridging theoretical and practical perspectives. By providing a robust and flexible methodological foundation, this work supports the development of tools to better manage legal and contractual risks in GB projects and contributes to the wider adoption of sustainable construction practices.
