- Abstract:
During the last decade, increasing attention has been paid to the problem of work-related stress and mental health in the construction industry. Numbers of correlative studies have shown that work-related stress will directly or indirectly affect the performance of individuals and organizations, even may present itself in the form of unsafe behavior. As one of the most significant causes of safety accidents, the unsafe behavior will bring immeasurable harm and loss to individuals and organizations. However, there is a relative lack of studies that provide clarity on underlying causes and the transformation principle of work-related stress into unsafe behavior.<br /> Through analyzing the causes and influential factors of work-related stress within the construction industry, this paper finds that during the transformation of the work-related stress into unsafe behavior, due to effects of the personal factors (risk awareness and unsafe psychology) as well as the environmental factors (safety climate and security measures), negative influences may be weakened and eliminated. Therefore, a three-stage efficiency evaluation model based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method is proposed. In addition, combining with the empirical research data of a large-scale project in Shanghai Pudong Airport, this paper quantitatively analyzes the efficiency of conversion from work-related stress to unsafe behavior and the effects of personal and environmental factors on conversion efficiency in China,and further explores the relationship between work-related stress and unsafe behavior. Finally, through the aspects of personnel management, implementation of the system and safety climate, advices are provided on controlling the negative impact of work-related stress from the cultural and organizational levels.
