This paper examines significant trends in the main construction occupations over the period since 1968 and identifies shifts in the relative importance of non-manual and operative employment. The state of the construction labour market in recent years is analysed and the role of relative earnings in balancing the supply and demand for employees is assessed. Variations in occupational employment arising at the regional level are briefly investigated. Finally, an attempt is made to forecast employment levels for some twelve occupational groups plus the self-employed into the medium term period through to 1985.
