  • Abstract:
An introduction is provided to some of the key issues relating to the context of sustainability. A more holistic approach to sustainability is called for, built around a consensus of an agreed definition and a philosophical framework to allow a meaningful discussion to take place, leading to improved decision making. At this emerging stage of the topic, it is recognized that even these matters are research issues and that in parallel with this debate it is important that progress at the sub-problem level must continue. These issues provide a context for many of the papers in these proceedings.
