Environments by Design
(1996- )
Editor(s): Timothy Eccles;
t.eccles@kingston.ac.uk
Editor(s)'s Affiliation: School of Surveying, Kingston-upon-Thames, UK
Editorial Board: International
Peer Reviewed: Yes
Coverage: Publishes research reports, criticisms and speculations about the
formation, use and evaluation of the designed environment. Contributions
come from architects, planners, surveyors and landscape designers; and from
authors working in occupations with concerns for specially made physical
settings. The focus is on how designed environments are used and in their
actual or predicted performance (whether in a physical, an economic or an
aesthetic sense). Equally, we are interested in work which deals with those
matters of judgement (or evaluation or appraisal) that led to the creation
of, or to proposals for, our environment. There is still a need to come to a
better understanding of the different outlooks and competing scales of
values that affect the creation of the designed environment. Critical essays
about these things are considered with editorial sympathy. Empirically
grounded work as well as speculative and philosophical studies are given
space in the journal.

Intelligent Buildings International
(2007- )
Editor-in-chief: Derek Clements-Croome
Editor's affiliation: University of Reading
Editorial Board: International
Peer Reviewed? Yes
Coverage: An intelligent building provides a sustainable, responsive,
effective and supportive environment within which individuals and
organisations can achieve their objectives. Technology is fundamental, but
is an enabler rather than an end in itself. Going beyond traditional
engineering and architecture solutions, the Intelligent Buildings
International (IBI) journal examines new methodologies and tools for
intelligent buildings, smart materials and systems, and explores the wider
context beyond theoretical foundations, linking practical solutions with
philosophical or sociological considerations. Overcoming fragmentation at
educational and professional levels, state-of-the-art analysis will be
presented alongside broad systems reviews and rigorous case studies.
Peer-reviewed research will be complemented by materials critically
evaluating technological developments from industrial contributors, book and
conference reviews and a diary of relevant events. Published papers will
report on both fundamental research dealing with theoretical work and
applied research dealing with practical issues and industrial innovations.
In this way, readers explore the interaction between technical
considerations and management issues. Scope of the Journal: : The design,
management and operation of buildings: Assessment of rating methods for
intelligent buildings: Smart materials: Healthy indoor environments:
Advances in design and management processes: Whole life performance
appraisals: Regulations and standards pertaining to intelligent buildings:
Biomimetics: The impact of intelligent buildings on people and
organisations: Development of IT and communications systems in the built
environment: The thinking behind intelligent buildings: Intelligent building
projects: case studies: Technological forecasting, social change and
innovation: Application of control and sensor technologies: Integration
systems, processes and user requirements.

Sustainable Engineering
(2008 -)
ISSN: 1939-7046 (electronic) 1939-7038 (paper)
Editor: Shahin Rahimifard
Editor's affiliation: Loughborough University
Peer Reviewed: Yes
Coverage: Engineering and sustainable development are intrinsically linked.
All capital plant and every consumable product depends on an engineering
input through design, manufacture and operation, if not for the product
itself then for the equipment required to process and transport the raw
materials and the final product. Many aspects of sustainable development
depend directly on appropriate and timely actions by engineers. Engineering
is an extended process of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and execution and,
therefore, it is argued that engineers must be involved from the outset of
any proposal to develop sustainable solutions. Engineering embraces many
disciplines and truly sustainable solutions are usually inter-disciplinary
in nature. Sustainable solutions have not only an environmental dimension
but also economic and social dimensions, thus extending the
multi-disciplinary nature beyond engineering.

Coverage: The Journal of African Real Estate Research (JARER) is an official publication of the African Real Estate Society (AfRES) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and is published jointly by AfRES and RICS. The journal aims to understand African real estate markets including their structure and workings; the nature and impacts of efforts that seek to reform them. In addition, the journal highlights the role and importance of real estate markets in Africa in contributing to: poverty alleviation, growth and stability of the household, provision of affordable housing, efficient resource allocation, equitable land management, social cohesion, innovation in urban development, urban and national economies, financial sector development. In this context, real estate markets are taken to include the entire life cycle of the built and natural asset, including planning, funding and development, construction, management, ownership and occupation and final recycling. The journal, which will be published three times a year, aims to provide a forum for debate on the key issues relating to the above issues through;
the publication of research papers based on the results of completed research projects or programmes;
notes on ongoing or proposed research programmes; reviews of relevant books;
letters commenting on papers and contributions previously published or on other matters of relevance. As well as contributing to the development of the research community in Africa and enabling discourse and dialogue between researchers engaged on research into real estate issues in Africa, the journal will also be used as a means of ensuring that governments and policy-makers with an involvement in Africa are made aware of the latest thinking and research on these issues. Papers that have a strong policy emphasis, either in analysing the impact of existing polices or putting forward proposals for appropriate polices, are strongly welcomed.

Journal of Information Technology
in Construction (ITCon)
Incorporating International Journal of IT in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (IT-AEC), which was formerly known as Computer-Integrated Design and Construction (CIDAC)
(1995 - )
Editor(s): Prof. Bo-Christer Björk
Editors' Affiliation: Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki, Finland
Editorial Board: International
Peer Reviewed: Yes
Coverage: The aim is to report on academic research and innovative industrial
development work concerning the application of information technology
throughout the life-cycle of the design, construction and occupancy of
buildings and related facilities. The focus is on presenting research
results dealing with or having relevance across disciplines and/or
life-cycle stages. There are other, existing journals addressing specialized
analysis, synthesis or optimization methods particular to design or
construction tasks within the individual subdisciplines of construction. Some
major topics which the journal aims to cover are: IT strategies within
organizations and groups, ranging from the level of the individual firm to a
consortium of firms to national construction industries; Construction
process and enterprise modelling; Re-engineering of the construction process
using IT as an enabling technology; Methods of concurrent engineering;
IT-supported communication across or within disciplines and life cycle
stages (hypermedia, Internet, videoconferencing etc.); Databases,
translation methodologies, remote communication between programs, shared
object libraries and other computing techniques for data exchange and
sharing; Technologies and standards for the digital representation of
buildings (building product models); Standards for structuring and
exchanging data in the construction process (building classification
systems, EDI messages, CAD-layering, document management, representation of
building regulations, component libraries); The use of IT-based techniques
for problem solving in construction (expert systems and AI, case-based
reasoning, simulation, neural networks, the genetic algorithm etc.);
Computerization of building standards, codes and regulations; Distance
learning of IT in civil engineering using IT itself. Papers eligible for
publication should present original research or be state-of the art reviews.
Papers presenting research in the early stages or research ideas only should
be avoided. (We should in fact stop talking about "papers" and use articles
or information, since paper is the medium we want to avoid as far as
possible.) In addition to university researchers, the journal invites
articles from industrial researchers and developers, especially those
presenting how the new capabilities offered by IT are being incorporated
into software products, or how companies are applying state-of-the-art IT
solutions to design and construction practice.
